It's been well over a year since we've had Toby on the show, and I invited him back for his annual appearance. I feel like a broken record on the pod recently - we've talked a lot about how MicroCaps are in the doldrums (that's putting it nicely), redemptions + no inflows, Small/Micro strategies can't raise new capital, etc... We haven't really talked about the quantitative reason (looking at the data) for why the confluence of all the events are happening. Toby is data king, and he does not disappoint in providing his perspective on what the data is telling us, including one semi-bold prediction about the big "R"-word (recession).

Interviewing Company CEOs: The Must-Ask Question Checklist Every Investor Needs with Gary Mishuris, Managing Partner and CIO at Silver Ring Value Partners

My guest on the show today is Gary Mishuris, Managing Partner and CIO at Silver Ring Value Partners. As I've mentioned on every show leading up, we have our conference, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER coming up on September 6-7, 2023 (planetmicrocapshowcase.com for more information), and it is a great opportunity for attendees to meet with MicroCap management teams and ask them questions. We've covered this topic quite often here on the show, but: 1. We haven't in a while, and 2. Gary's article, same as today's episode title, I think provides a solid framework/check list of questions that every investor could refer to when thinking about what they want to speak with management about.

 

My biggest takeaway that stuck with me is asking yourself the following: "what are you trying to accomplish" in your interaction with management. I think most folks go into these conversations and their goal is thinking they can get CEOs to give them information that's either borderline or non-public altogether. Most management teams are wise to those tricks and will lose respect for you as an investor because they get the game you're trying to play. But asking yourself "what are you trying to accomplish", perhaps trying to build a relationship with the CEO or getting a feel of the CEOs values, and then constructing questions around that, I think can help you immensely with getting the results you're hoping for. There's even more quality insight from Gary, so hopefully you'll see its not just another "How To" talk to management episode.

My guest on the show today is Paul, a small and microcap investor better known by his Twitter handle @Investmentideen. We've been going back and forth on doing an interview for a while, and he recently published a thread on how Paul Andreola and Brandon Mackie's investing framework, "Small Cap Discovery", has impacted his investing process. The thread is in the show notes by the way. Paul and Brandon are great friends of Planet MicroCap, and the presentation they did on this framework back in 2016, I was in the room for that, not to mention the many times both of them have been on the podcast. So, I thought it was really cool that Paul found this framework and his been able to extrapolate from there a Small/MicroCap strategy that works for him. We talk about the framework, how Paul implements it and some examples of investments he's made where he's benefitted, as well as made mistakes.
