After a great recommendation by friend of the show, Rich Howe from Stock Spinoff Investing, Derek and I found a time to connect and discuss all things financials. We chatted about regional banks, Puerto Rico, consumer finance, and what it's like starting a hedge fund in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis. Since launching Gator Capital, his fund's performance has been stellar - 21.52% Annual Compound Return, and I really enjoyed finding out why.

I've known Rick for my entire career in Financial Media, and whenever I have questions about what happening in Precious Metals, Natural Resources, Mining, he's the guy. Since I last spoke to Rick, he has stepped down as CEO at Sprott US Holdings, and has a little more time doing what he loves: Investing and Speculating. I asked Rick to join me on the pod because I just finished doing 100 interviews for the Precious Metals Summit - Beaver Creek, the best event in the Precious Metals space in my opinion, and I had to get his opinion on some of what I heard from management teams. In addition, we hadn't talked since the pandemic hit in early 2020, so I wanted to hear his takes on the silver short squeeze, Reddit investing, how all this has affected precious metals, and of course, taking up all the headlines of late, Uranium.

The title of this episode is "Not Your Father's Stocks" as an ode to, not only Tyler's podcast by the same name, but what inspired him to get into investing in the first place. There are many lessons we learn from our parents, and as a father myself, I can only hope my kids become a far better people than I one day. With that said, you will most certainly love how Tyler became obsessed with researching stocks and investing because well, his father was so bad at it. Tyler is driven to be the best he possibly can be and I'm thankful to his father for inspiring him to get after it the way he has and continues to with Augury Research.

For this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I’m sharing with you the MicroCap Graduation Series: Barry Sloane, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Newtek Business Services Corp. (NASDAQ: NEWT). I've known and interviewed Barry as far back at maybe 7 or 8 years ago, and Newtek was actually featured on the front cover of our magazine, the MicroCap Review back in March 2015.
The last 18 months have been especially interesting for Newtek, where, at its peak on June 4, 2021, since its March 2020 low, has gone up 331%, and as of August 24, 2021, up 215%. As the company is described, "Newtek Business Services Corp., Your Business Solutions Company®, is an internally managed BDC, which along with its controlled portfolio companies, provides a wide range of business and financial solutions under the Newtek® brand to the small- and medium-sized business (“SMB”) market."
Back in March 2020, the company made several announcements on its involvement in providing PPP loans to small businesses and via the CARES Act, and Barry, as he will tell you, has never been busier. In this discussion, we cover everything from why Barry started Newtek over 20 years ago, how he loves being a public company CEO (as he says, 'you have to'), growing pains and much much more.
