I wanted to start off this episode by thanking Ian Cassel and Mike Schellinger for inviting me to the MicroCap Leadership Summit. It was a fantastic event, where I met so many of you who listen to each and every episode. I have to say, it was a huge thrill for me to be recognized finally for not having the same name as the owner of the New England Patriots. But in all seriousness, thank you so much for listening and I was quite humbled by your kind words. If you like what you hear, I ask that you leave a review on iTunes so that more investors can learn about the world of MicroCap stocks.
Now, back to business - for this episode of Planet MicroCap, I spoke with Sean Iddings, Co-Author of the book, “Intelligent Fanatics Project.” Sean co-wrote the book with my Episode 1 guest, Ian Cassel, and its purpose is to show how great leaders build sustainable businesses. Why is this important and how does it correlate to MicroCap investing? In almost every episode, we discuss the importance of management and the CEO; these are the teams and individuals that we are betting on. The “Intelligent Fanatics Project” highlights 8 managers who have turned small businesses into very large ones. As Ian says in the preface to the book, “All great companies started as small companies, and intelligent fanatics founded most great companies.”
The goal for this interview is to learn about “Intelligent Fanatics”, look for the common elements that these leaders have, and what we can learn from them to become better MicroCap investors, business people and entrepreneurs.

For this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Sam Namiri, Associate at Grand Slam Asset Management. I’ve met Sam at many MicroCap conferences over the years, and we would exchange ideas about what is going in the MicroCap market. I thought it would be informative to do an interview with Sam and share with all of you what I’ve learned in my conversations with him. In this interview, we discuss Sam’s MicroCap investing strategy and how that’s evolved since he started at lunch-time in high school. Specifically, what I thought was very interesting for this interview and the goal for this episode is to understand how to value a MicroCap stock, according to Sam.

For this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Donald Porter, Senior Vice President at DGHM & Co. I met Donald a couple months ago, and we were talking about how his firm was working on a white paper talking about MicroCap stocks. I followed up with him and he sent it over. The white paper is titled, “MicroCaps Value Uncovered,” and I thought, rather than dissecting the paper myself, why not invite Donald onto the podcast to explain the firm’s thesis.
And furthermore, as the first line of the thesis states, “The world of microcap stocks is an exciting, vast and rich place to allocate capital.” That got my attention and I wanted to hear more, so here we go.
The goal for this episode is to learn about the opportunities when investing in MicroCap Stocks, according to DGHM & Co., what makes MicroCap stocks interesting today relative to other asset classes, and an understanding of MicroCap stocks as compared to large caps.

For this episode of the PlanetMicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Adam J. Epstein, Founder of Third CreekAdvisors, LLC. Mr. Epstein is a former institutional investor, well-known speaker on corporate governance, and the author of the best-selling resource created specifically for small-cap corporate directors, titled, “The Perfect Corporate Board: A Handbook for Mastering the Unique Challenges of Small-Cap Companies.”
As defined by Investopedia, Corporate Governance, “is the system of rules, practices and processes by which a company is directed and controlled. Corporate Governance essentially involves balancing the interests of the many stakeholders in a company – these include shareholders, management, customers, suppliers, financiers, government and the community. Since corporate governance also provides the framework for attaining a company’s objectives it encompasses practically every sphere of management from action plans and internal controls to performance measurement and corporate disclosure.” You can probably imagine the implications of having good or bad corporate governance in a MicroCap company.
The goal for this episode is to learn about and define corporate governance, understand why this is important when doing your due diligence and what we can do as investors to better know what we’re getting on the corporate governance front in MicroCap companies.

For this episode of the PlanetMicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Rick Rule, President and CEO of Sprott U.S. Holdings, Inc. Rick Rule has dedicated his entire life to natural resource securities investing, and is one of the more sought after speakers and leading thinkers in natural resources and mining. I’ve seen him speak at many conferences to packed rooms, and let me tell you, when he speaks, people listen. I have wanted to speak with him since starting this podcast, so I feel quite privileged that he was able to carve out some time to do this. I felt that he was the natural resource, pardon the pun, to discuss the cyclical nature of resources. Roughly being able to predict where we are in any given cycle, while difficult, can provide an edge when looking at investing in microcap resource companies. In this interview, Rick provides an overview to understand when these peaks and valleys can and do happen, and their characteristics.
The goal for this episode is to learn about the cyclical nature of the resource market, in his opinion, where we are currently at in the cycle, and his advice for aspiring MicroCap Investors looking at the resource sector.

For this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Mike Corbett CEO and Portfolio Manager for Perritt Capital Management. One thing I hear quite a bit from MicroCap CEO’s and management is their desire to meet with institutions. According to Investopedia.com, an “Institutional Investor”, “is a non-bank person or organization that trades securities in large enough quantities or dollar amounts that they qualify for preferential treatment and lower commissions.” Investopedia.com goes on to break down what this term implies, “watching what the big money is buying can sometimes be a good indicator, as they (supposedly) know what they are doing.” In past interviews on the podcast, I recall that the goal as a MicroCap Investor is to find those companies before they get institutional coverage for this very reason – the expectation that once the institutions get involved, the cat is out of the bag, so to speak. So, I wanted to understand this a little better – who and what is an institutional investor and key in on what they look for in MicroCap stocks.
The goal for this episode is to learn about what a fund is, in particular, a MicroCap fund, and if there is a difference in philosophy for investing between an institutional and an individual investor, understanding Mike’s due diligence process and his advice for investors looking into investing in MicroCap stocks.
The Planet MicroCap Podcast is brought to you by SNN Incorporated, publishers of StockNewsNow.com, The Official MicroCap News Source, and the MicroCap Review Magazine, the leading magazine in the MicroCap market - check out the latest issue here: MicroCap Review Winter/Spring 2016
In this episode, Mike and I discuss the following topics:
- Mike's background and he got into MicroCaps and land at Perritt
- What is a fund, and in particular, a MicroCap fund
- At Perritt Capital Management, why does a fund, and the “Opportunities Fund” in particular, exist to invest in MicroCap stocks? What do MicroCaps have to offer?
- What is your investing philosophy? How do you evaluate MicroCap companies? And is it any different from the perspective as a fund, as opposed to an individual investor?
- What is the due diligence process? Can you name a few criteria? What is your investment process?
- How important is liquidity and the ability to trade in and out?
- How hard is it to invest $100 million and more?
- Is your fund sector agnostic?
- When do you cut your losses? Is there a % down to buy or sell? And, do you buy more when it moves up a certain %?
- What for example is an undiscovered stock to you?
- What’s is your advice for investors looking at investing in MicroCap stocks? Any resources you recommend?

A+ and equity crowdfunding have been in the news quite a bit recently, especially since the first ever Reg. A+ deal, Elio Motors, got funded and went public on OTC Markets. This new alternative financing option did not happen overnight, it’s been in the works for quite a while, and although it’s still very early, there could be opportunity to invest in exciting new companies using this vehicle. But, it was unclear to me how it all works. I thought, who better to explain this topic than the Father of the JOBS Act himself, David Weild.
The goal for this episode is to learn about Reg. A+, equity crowdfunding, how this type of financing is changing the landscape of raising capital for emerging growth companies, and what investors should understand about these types of deals.
