For this episode of Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Chris Irons, Founder of Quoth the Raven Research and Equity Analyst & Senior Business Writer at GeoInvesting. I was introduced to Chris via Maj Soueidan from GeoInvesting.com and my guest for Episode 14. I wanted to discuss an investing style that depending on who talk to has both positive and negative connotations.
For those who don’t know, Short Selling, selling a stock short or having a short position in a stock, according to Investopedia, is defined as, “the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller, or that the seller has borrowed. Short selling is motivated by the belief that a security’s price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price to make a profit.”
There is a lot more nuance to short selling as will be evidenced in my interview. The goal for this episode to clearly define and understand what short selling is, how one can do it, why some investors sell stock short and how this applies to MicroCap stocks.

For this episode of Planet MicroCapPodcast, I spoke with Kevin Shea, Private Investor and Member of theMicroCapClub. I recently met Kevin at the MicroCapClub Leadership Summit inChicago. At lunch, with Kevin leading the discussion, we started talking about a topic that I basically knew nothing about: Technical Analysis. According to Investopedia,Technical Analysis is defined as, “a trading tool employed to evaluate securities and attempt to forecast their future movement by analyzing statistics gathered from trading activity, such as price movement and volume.” Think of Technical Analysis as the opposite of Fundamental Analysis, however, as you will hear, in MicroCap investing, one tool isn’t necessarily used without the other. The goal for this interview is to learn about Technical Analysis and how it can be applied as a tool in your MicroCap investing strategy.

I wanted to start off this episode by thanking Ian Cassel and Mike Schellinger for inviting me to the MicroCap Leadership Summit. It was a fantastic event, where I met so many of you who listen to each and every episode. I have to say, it was a huge thrill for me to be recognized finally for not having the same name as the owner of the New England Patriots. But in all seriousness, thank you so much for listening and I was quite humbled by your kind words. If you like what you hear, I ask that you leave a review on iTunes so that more investors can learn about the world of MicroCap stocks.
Now, back to business - for this episode of Planet MicroCap, I spoke with Sean Iddings, Co-Author of the book, “Intelligent Fanatics Project.” Sean co-wrote the book with my Episode 1 guest, Ian Cassel, and its purpose is to show how great leaders build sustainable businesses. Why is this important and how does it correlate to MicroCap investing? In almost every episode, we discuss the importance of management and the CEO; these are the teams and individuals that we are betting on. The “Intelligent Fanatics Project” highlights 8 managers who have turned small businesses into very large ones. As Ian says in the preface to the book, “All great companies started as small companies, and intelligent fanatics founded most great companies.”
The goal for this interview is to learn about “Intelligent Fanatics”, look for the common elements that these leaders have, and what we can learn from them to become better MicroCap investors, business people and entrepreneurs.

In this interview, we discuss Sam’s MicroCap investing strategy and how that’s evolved since he started at lunch-time in high school. Specifically, what I thought was very interesting for this interview and the goal for this episode is to understand how to value a MicroCap stock, according to Sam.

For this episode of the Planet MicroCap Podcast, I spoke with Donald Porter, Senior Vice President at DGHM & Co. I met Donald a couple months ago, and we were talking about how his firm was working on a white paper talking about MicroCap stocks. I followed up with him and he sent it over. The white paper is titled, “MicroCaps Value Uncovered,” and I thought, rather than dissecting the paper myself, why not invite Donald onto the podcast to explain the firm’s thesis.
And furthermore, as the first line of the thesis states, “The world of microcap stocks is an exciting, vast and rich place to allocate capital.” That got my attention and I wanted to hear more, so here we go.
The goal for this episode is to learn about the opportunities when investing in MicroCap Stocks, according to DGHM & Co., what makes MicroCap stocks interesting today relative to other asset classes, and an understanding of MicroCap stocks as compared to large caps.
